What Is Synnd and How Does It Work?

by Mike on March 3, 2010

I first heard about Synnd from a friend, and it sounded really interesting. The thought of being able to harness the power of Synnd’s 800+ members into voting, social bookmarking and tweeting your submissions seemed like a very compelling concept. Plus the fact that everything is almost completely automated was another thing that caught my eye. So, a few days ago, I took the plunge and signed up for the 14 day trial for $1 offer. In this Synnd review blog, I’m going to chronicle my experiences with using Synnd to see if it actually works as advertised.

The whole Synnd ecosystem, is based on credits. To accumulate credits, you have to spend some time promoting campaigns of other members. You can bookmark their page to a social bookmarking site, vote or comment on their story on Digg, or Retweet one of their tweets. Each action you take earns you one credit. Normally, this might be a somewhat time consuming process, but Synnd’s web-based interface makes earning credits pretty simple. You don’t actually have to login to each site and enter in all the required info. Instead, you basically just select a task to complete, and it will get sent to your Remote Automator which will do the actual task for you.

The Remote Automator is a separate program that you need to install and it sits in your computer’s system tray waiting for tasks to complete. Whenever it has a task to complete, it will automatically login to each site and do the necessary task on your behalf. It really is hands-free and I’ve found it to be quite easy and fast to earn credits. You also get 500 free credits a month with the most basic membership and there are more expensive membership plans that offer more free credits.

Synnd does have some strict quality control rules, and you can’t just submit anything you want. There are currently 3 different types of campaigns you can create in Syndd. A Syndication campaign is content that you want promoted on Digg, Mixx or Reddit. These are sites that allow you to “vote” up content to increase their visibility to their general user-base. You can only promote content that’s non-promotional in nature to these sites, as no one wants to use their Digg account for example to vote up crap content.

Bookmarking campaigns are less restrictive about what you can submit, and this is the type of campaign you would generally use to build backlinks back to your site for SEO purposes. You do have to spend some time spinning your article titles, descriptions and tags so that each submission to a social bookmarking site is unique. Finally, Synnd supports Twitter campaigns which allows you to get your Tweets retweeted by Synnd member’s twitter accounts. Tweets need to be non-promotional in nature as the whole system is compromised if spam starts being retweeted from everyone’s accounts.

At the time of this post, Synnd supports the following 8 social media accounts, although it looks like more are on the way:

I like the fact that the documentation is kept up to date and there’s quite a bit of training material that comes with Synnd. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I must say the web interface is pretty slick and easy to use. I have my Remote Automator up and running and I have already started accumulating some credits. I’ve set up two campaigns so far, 1 Twitter and 1 Bookmarking and it took about 24 hours to get them looked at. My bookmarking campaign was rejected since I forgot to spin my tags, but my Twitter campaign is off an running.

I think the whole Synnd concept is pretty cool, and I think it’s really going to work well if you have some really good content to promote. Especially if you write the types of topics that people on Digg or Reddit are likely to enjoy, Synnd is going to be a great way to get your content visible so it can go viral on its own. I’m still not unsure how effective the social bookmarking part will be, but I am going to try it out on this site. In future posts, you’re going to see some case studies I’m going to be running, so check back to see the results.
